In 2010, we conducted a survey in response to the general belief among MEP engineers and designers that 3D-BIM would become—if it weren't already—the industry standard in a few years. We discovered that most respondents used 3D-BIM on less than half of their projects, if at all.
We repeated the survey for nine more years, each time noting that 3D-BIM usage had not changed significantly compared to previous years. This outcome has remained consistent, and we do not expect it to change. Most MEP professionals who used 3D-BIM a decade ago are still using it now. And most MEP professionals who weren't using 3D-BIM still don't.
Our 2020 survey received much fewer responses than previous iterations. If we had received enough data to produce another report, we suspect the results would have been similar. Based on this decline in attention and the predictability of the results, we have decided the annual BIM MEP survey has run its course, and we will no longer conduct it.
Thank you to everyone who contributed over the years. You can read the 2019 survey results here, which also includes links to results for previous years.
